Brea

About 26 years ago I saw a beautiful name on a map, La Brea. I thought to myself, if I ever have a daughter that will be her name, Brea. She was born in April 1981, and I named her Brea Marie. Years later I enjoyed the cookbooks and now the bread. When Nancy started making bread that is when my love of your bakery exploded. I am eating a piece of your Olive Loaf now. I brought your Three- Cheese Semolina Bread to work, and it disappeared before you could blink. I bought a loaf of Whole Grain bread for my partner and he could not stop eating it along with your Nut & Honey Snack Granola. Of course, I am not getting any thinner. I drive 2 miles every three days to give myself a treat and pick out the loaves I am going to bring home. My daughter Brea lives in Portland now, and I drove 800 miles with your loaves of bread in a basket for her, not realizing it was sold up there also, such a treat. Never realizing that my favorite bread in the world is the same as my daughters name. Did you know that homemade marshmallows and your Pecan Raisin bread go great together? Thirty seconds in the microwave and you have a unique version of s'mores. So delicious!

When Only the Best Will Do

Back in the 1970s, when most everyone was concerned about high gas and food prices, I was struggling to stretch the family food budget each month, cutting back where possible. A woman from Russia moved into our neighborhood at that time and we became friends. Helen was in a worse financial condition than I, but she continued to buy her bread at a very expensive bakery. She said she could not eat what we Americans called "bread", but had to have the crusty, hearty loaves of bread she was used to in her country, no matter the cost. I remember thinking how spoiled she was and that she could eat Wonder Bread like the rest of us. Years have passed, and when I bought my first loaf of your wonderful La Brea Bakery Organic Wheat Loaf (at a very reasonable price), I thought of Helen, and I understood.

Wow! What Great Bread!

I recently went looking for something good to dip into olive oil and balsamic vinegar and saw your bread in a basket display in my local grocery store. I thought I would give it a try and am glad I did. I've eaten it every day since then. I especially enjoy the Organic Wheat Loaf. Thank you for such a wonderful product!!!

Boulanger Chopped Garlic Petite Loaf

I must tell you that the Boulanger Chopped Garlic Petite Loaf is THE BEST bread I have ever tasted and only allow myself one of these loaves once every 2 months, as we bake it and roll our pieces in olive oil and Italian herbs. Just so decadent!! You can NOT stop making this bread. I bake bread, but don't believe I can make it like you folks. Just wanted to tell you, you have a superb product! It is wonderful...

The Night Before Christmas Bread!

Our extended family all comes together at our humble mountain house shared by all, in the country by Newland, North Carolina, each Christmas Eve. This great tradition started including La Brea Bakery bread several years ago when a cousin from California began attending - with her armloads of bread, and it's never been better! We warm up the plethora of loaves over red embers in the HUGE fireplace! Then pass it all around and belly up to the table full of spreads, enjoying all the different flavors on the most delicious bread ever made!! As we stoke up the fire again, we take turns reading "The Night Before Christmas". I know our children will pass the tradition on... it's just great fun.

Personal Story

Good things come from bad things. I am a victim (and I don't like using that word victim) of Hurricane Katrina. So many good things have come my way from being a part of this disaster. I had a cookbook of the breads from La Brea Bakery. I loved that cookbook and of course it was lost along with everything we owned. I am now living in Southern California, which I love very much and I went to a cooking class at the Macy's, located in South Coast Plaza. I got to meet the owner of La Brea Bakery and not only do I have the cookbook again, I now own a signed copy. This was an event that I will always remember, and if it weren't for a bad thing happening I would not have experienced such a fun, good time. Thanks again, it was really an enjoyable evening.

I am HOOKED

I have been buying La Brea Bakery bread for at least a year now, enjoying every bread I purchase, however trying to eat more whole grains, I stumbled across your Whole Grain Loaf and now I am HOOKED. I love this bread so much I can eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but I do need to eat in moderation. I mostly make my sandwiches with it, however toasted is great. The crunch of the bread is the most enjoyable part and the flavor unbeatable. Finding good bread in my area is tough. La Brea Bakery just made it a lot easier. Thank you for coming to my town.

Nancy’s Sourdough

My 2nd oldest friend is my sourdough starter, made by following Ms. Silverton's step-by-step directions shown on Cooking With Julia on PBS. It has survived divorce, broken containers, and even benign neglect. It sits next to my homemade rye sour and patiently takes turns being utilized with its fridge buddy. Nancy- thanks so very much for helping keep the old traditions alive; I'm the only person I know who still bakes their own bread. Though others enjoy my labors, I must say. BRAVA!!!

Great Bread! ...Did you make it?

I just retired after 40 years of teaching art in the public schools of California. We live near Yosemite National Park, and my dream was to have a Bed & Breakfast and serve really good breakfasts, in a beautiful setting, with real silver and nice linens. We saved our money, bought property in 1980 on the Merced River, put money away every month, traveled, stayed in bed and breakfasts every summer, and collected antiques, art, and furnishings for our dream bed and breakfast. After many struggles with the planning and building process, we built our "inn" on the banks of the beautiful Merced. I love to cook, and have had great fun reading cookbooks, and trying recipes and menus. The biggest problem we encountered here is that we are so remote; it is difficult to get good produce and bakery goods. My husband and I are doing all the work in our B&B, and I find I have very little time to bake! I was delighted when our closest local grocery store began to carry your bread. We discovered your wonderful La Brea Bakery Whole Grain Loaf...fantastically good! I serve it heated almost every morning to my B&B guests, and someone always remarks, "Great Bread!...Did you make it?" I happily admit that though I have tried to make my own whole grain bread, I cannot make one as good as this one from La Brea Bakery. The guests seem to appreciate my honesty, and I have given the name of the bread, or the paper package to many. Your bread is simply delicious, healthy, and truly appreciated by my guests! Thank you for creating such a delicious, wholesome bread. You have helped make my breakfasts at Yosemite Blue Butterfly B&B Inn truly memorable!

Surprise and Delight

I moved to a rural area in New York after many happy years in Los Angeles, in order to start a new job. I lived off of La Brea Avenue and often purchased from The Original La Brea Bakery and from grocery stores in the area. Imagine my surprise and delight to find that our local store out here in the country carries your breads! (Peck's Market, Callicoon, NY) My favorite is the Organic Wheat Loaf. Another friend and her family are nearby, also from California, and they love your breads, too.

French Bread

I grew up in New Orleans 60 years ago and consider myself an expert on French bread. Your [La Brea Bakery] baguettes available here in Target and Whole Food stores is the closest to the French bread of my child hood. I always keep a couple of packages in my freezer. Keep up the good work.
